Jill Scott was discovered by The Roots drummer Amir, with whom she scored a hit in 1999: You Got Me. This was followed by a collaboration with Eric Benet, Will Smith, Common, a tour of Canada and a role in the Broadway Musical Rent. Her worldwide breakthrough came in 2000 with her critically acclaimed debut Who Is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds Vol. 1, multiple platinum rating. As a perfect gift for
… the holidays (according to the record company), this live double album, recorded in Los Angeles, Philadelphia (Scott's hometown) and in the Constitution Hall in Washington. The album is not a real snack as it contains six new tracks in addition to eleven live performances of well-known work. The tricky thing with live recordings is that part of the magic of a concert is lost on record and this double album also suffers a bit from that. The intimate atmosphere and sexy grooves on Who Is Jill Scott have more or less disappeared on this album. What remains is a soul singer, who sings beautifully, but sounds much more ordinary and civilized than what she actually has at home.
