American singer Al Jarreau was born in the North American city of Milwaukee. He was the son of a pastor and so began his singing career in the local church choir. He became known with the successful albums Look To The Rainbow (1977), This Time (1980) and Breakin 'Away (1981). The last album featured the great Roofgarden, still his biggest hit in the Netherlands. Friend and foe agree on Al Jarreau's
… vocal qualities. The CD All I Got is the successor to Tomorrow Today, which was released in 2000 after a silence of six years. It has become a varied album. So we heard some romantic soul ballads pass by, but also 'smooth' jazz, improvisations where he acts as a one-man scat band and even an acapella cover of Route 66. Highlights include the duet with Joe Cocker (Lost And Found) and the gospel-like Jacaranda Bougainvillea about the situation in South Africa. (MvP)more
