Tarkan is now by far the most popular pop singer in Turkey, just as popular as, for example, Marco Borsato in the Netherlands. Tarkan was born in Germany but moved to Turkey with his family when he was fourteen. He studied classical music and collaborated with well-known Turkish composers. Tarkan's first album Yine Sensiz was released in 1993, heralding the start of an impressive pop career. He sets
… a record with the second album Aacayipsin (1994) and the album Olürüm Sana (1998) is also a blockbuster. The single Sikadim from the album Tarkan (1999) represents his international breakthrough: he achieved a good place on numerous European charts. The attractive singer with the emotional, sultry voice now lives in New York and is increasingly becoming the Turkish 'Ricky Martin' or 'Enrique Iglesias'. Just like on the previous albums, Tarkan mixes Turkish / oriental elements with dance and pop music on the album Karma (2002). His lyrics are sexually charged and contain a lot of Turkish 'slang'. He mainly sings about love and about equality between men and women. The album alternately contains beautifully arranged emotional ballads and swinging up-tempo music. (SvdP)more
