The English singer and songwriter John Cunningham has been releasing records since 1989, mostly on tiny independent labels. His style evolved into a contemporary take on the orchestral, classical pop of the (late) Beach Boys, Elton John and ELO. Lack of commercial success meant that Cunningham could not have the same sky-high budgets for his albums as his famous examples. This provides the nice
… contrast of strongly arranged pop songs, which have been recorded with limited resources and an intimate living room feeling. Later on the album other influences can also be observed, such as the subdued vocals of Nick Drake and the Indian melodies of hippie bands such as The Incredible String Band. It makes Cunningham's music somewhat difficult to place. Add to that the fact that the songs need several spins to last and you have an artist that the connoisseur licks his fingers at, but who doesn't care much for the general public. (MS)more
