Take trashy disco doll. Add to this punky feminism, self-relativizing vocal cut-ups, a battery of analog synthesizers from a leftover 1980s, and occasional bursts of coarse grinding noise and you get an ironic, fascinating project that turns out to be both performance and music. While Will Save Us All, Chicks On Speed's debut, could still be compared with feminist punk bands like The Raincoats and
… Delta 5, on 99c they move more towards dance, with electro as the main ingredient. For this CD, Chicks On Speed invited a number of like-minded singers, such as Miss Kittin, Le Tigre, Nicola from Adult, Peaches and Tina Weymouth from Talking 'Heads and the Tom Tom Club, from whom they covered Wordy Rappinghood on this CD. This produces a very entertaining, A CD steeped in irony, in which electro fortunately does not linger in the retro corner again, but is used as part of a fully-fledged contemporary sound. (AD)more
