Björk's fifth studio album Medúlla is a concept album. An album on which idea and process are just as important as the result. The rationale behind Medúlla is that instruments have been replaced by human vocals. This does not mean that it is an a cappella album in the sense of vocals only, but that every sound is produced by (sampled) voices (apart from a single piano and gong). For this Björk
… the help of beatboxers and , throat singer , , and English and Icelandic choirs. The result is so special and wonderful that it takes at least two listens to get through what you hear and how refined and clever the CD is put together. Headphones are therefore almost obligatory to do justice to the depth and detail of the production. The result of this original and unique approach is that Medúlla Björk's least accessible album to date is, however beautiful her voice and the songs are. What was started with Homogenic and Vespertine seems to be a fact with Medúlla: Björk no longer makes pop, but 'art with a large K', and not everyone will appreciate that equally. But that is also the only comment on this otherwise beautiful CD. (IV)more
