Benny Sings is the alter ego of former sonology student Tim van Berkestijn. Two years ago he released the charming album Champagne People, which he had put together on his own. After many positive reactions (including an Essent Award), Benny decided to put together a band to be able to perform his music live. Apparently that went so well that he recorded his second album live in the Amsterdam jazz
… and improvisation hall Het Bimhuis. A remarkable location because the jazz level is low. Benny makes sweet pop songs with warm subtle arrangements that include electric pianos, wind instruments, a harmonica and female choirs. It is almost unbelievable that you are listening to a live concert, the sound quality and the playing level are so high. I Love You sounds familiar and strange at the same time, as the best work of Brian Wilson, 10CC and Todd Rundgren can be. Benny's band adds a perfect sense of restrained funk to that. The result is sophisticated pop music without any effect whatsoever. (MS)more
