Beck always has to wait and see which way the wind will blow. However, anyone who looks at his album history can certainly find a pattern. In general, airy, funky records ( , ) are alternated with dark and serious records ( , ). Guero (Spanish for white) is the successor to Sea Change (2002) and according to the 'Beckwet' so very cheerful and funky. That is not surprising since Beck worked again
… with producers Tony Hoffer and , who also produced Odelay. And then there is also the surprising musical contribution of ( ), who took care of the bass parts of Go It Alone. Guero is full of songs that go in all directions, hip-hop is back and many songs have a Mexican flavor. The solid opener and also single, E-Pro, is followed by Girl, which together are the highlights of this album. Another highlight is Earthquake Weather with a very surprising chorus. The fire turns out to be far from consumed at Beck. (JdD)more
