In the fourteen years that passed between The Criminal Under My Own Hat (1992) and The True False Identity, T-Bone Burnett (1948) gained an enormous reputation as a producer for Elvis Costello, Los Lobos, Counting Crows and Gillian Welch. He was also the man behind The Black & White Night with Roy Orbison and the music for the films of The Coen Brothers, including the famous soundtrack for Oh!
Brother Where Art Thou ?. Still, Burnett is primarily a gifted artist himself. The True False Identity shows a reborn Burnett, who after fourteen years of silence, he says, had gotten a fresh look at making music again. The songs were written in a period of isolation and worked out with top musicians such as drummer Jim Keltner and guitarist Marc Ribot. The album contains choppy, angular 'blues noir' without any frills, with dark, philosophical texts about death and religion. An impressive comeback. (MS)more
