Beverley Knight is considered one of the best British soul singers of the new millennium. Since international soul has long been dominated by Americans, British soul stars are hardly able to break through outside their homeland and Beverley Knight is no exception. Instead of focusing even longer on (American) hip-hop and R&B, Knight decided to draw inspiration for Music City Soul from the soul
… and rhythm & blues of the sixties, and especially the British version of it. Under the direction of producer Mark Nevers, who previously did a similar job for Candi Staton, Beverley locked himself up with a group of musicians for a week, to try out songs like Ain't That A Lot Of Love (Taj Mahal) and Time Is. In My Side (The Rolling Stones, Irma Thomas). A lively and spontaneous album was the result. Without the expensive production and hip beats of her earlier albums, Beverley's vocals are better than ever. Special guest on three songs is Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood. (MS)more
