The compilation compilation Dylan - the best of Bob Dylan on one disc - is an unenviable man. So many fans, so many preferences and every Dylan fan will miss a favorite. Nevertheless, we have managed to compile a defensible anthology from Dylan's work. Chosen were the early protest songs that grew into anthems (Blowin 'In The Wind, The Times They Are A-Changin'), his best electrical work (Subterranean
… Homesick Blues, Maggie's Farm, Like A Rolling Stone), his best poetry (Tangled Up In Blue, Mr. Tambourine Man) and his most beautiful pop songs (Just Like A Woman, Make You Feel My Love, Forever Young). Dylan himself hardly scored big single hits - his voice was not 'beautiful' enough for that - so that many people know his best-known songs mainly in cover versions. For them, it can be a revelation to see the original performances of Mr. Tambourine Man ( ), All Along The Watchtower ( ) and Knockin'On Heaven's Door ( , ). The motivation behind the final choice of song is neatly explained in the liner notes, but also now applies: there is no correspondence about the result. The triple CD digs deeper into the master's oeuvre and also features lesser-known gems. (MS)more
