As godfathers of goth music and at the same time as creators of hit music that is as eccentric as it is catchy, The Cure no longer has to prove itself in 2008. This brainchild of the ever-expired diva-looking Robert Smith does what it makes sense to do: a tour of the better festivals, an artistic tour report on DVD (Festival 2005) and then tinker with a new record in peace. … they do use the musical tools that once made their music so claustrophobic and melancholic, with guitars that sound like deep seas and drums like sledgehammers, this album continues to sound relaxed. It opens promisingly threateningly with Underneath The Stars, followed by the uptempo single - in Head On The Door atmospheres - The Only One. Uptempo and noisy the record then continues to sound as Smith sends Brandon Flowers, the lead singer of The Killers, and other epigones home with his melodic howl. Only in the tail does the tempo decrease again and the noise of screaming guitars increases. But they remain unmistakably reflections of relaxed gatherings in the studio.
