It can be honestly said that Kanye West has hip-hop in a hold. If you don't have beats from the superproducer on your album, you simply don't count in 2008. It is not unjustified that the producer and rapper is so highly regarded. In roughly four years, we have heard the well-known pitched soul samples make room for contagious synthesizers. The death of his mother and an engagement that was canceled - coupled with all that comes with such star status - left heart broken. The tears were poured into a drum computer and the album 808's & Heartbreak was born, which in its own words had to become 'a therapeutic album'. But what about a Kanye West singing like ? Can we still call this hip-hop at all? A new sound does not automatically mean a better sound. The question is whether the album will be appreciated. (GL)more
