As one of the driving forces of The Band, drummer / singer Levon Helm managed to leave his mark on music history. After the band split in the mid-1970s, he managed to build up a decent career as an actor, but the music kept luring. While Robbie Robertson was considered the creative genius of that legendary band at the time, in 2009 it is mainly Helm who still knows how to propagate the unique eclectic
… mix of American roots styles (country, blues, soul, jazz, gospel) with verve. He has gathered a great band around him and asked Allen Toussaint to write a few wind arrangements. Helm performs his task as we are used to: with full commitment and passion. His nose for good songs (from Randy Newman, Muddy Waters, The Staple Singers, among others) does the rest. Electric Dirt is timelessly good, a real treat for fans of The Band. (MS)more
