Angie's back. She sings it herself in the short title track that functions smoothly on a sample from Family Affair by Sly & The Family Stone. But Angie hadn't been gone that long. Her previous album, The Art Of Love & War from 2007, sold particularly well in the United States. Despite the title, Unexpected continues where Love & War left off. Some songs lean back to the soul sound of
… the seventies, such as the single I Ain't Hearin 'U, in which Stone sings about a nice guy who can't cheat. Other songs move more towards contemporary R&B. Sometimes successful, such as the tidy Hey Mr. DJ or the bedroom ballad Kiss All Over Your Body, but the AutoTune that sickened Angie's powerful voice in Free, should have been left out. Unexpected does not offer new musical insights. Lovers of her previous albums will know enough. (PdK)more
