Every year the BBC publishes a list of promising and up-and-coming artists. In January 2010 it was Ellie Goulding's honor to top this list. As a result, she is now in the company of the previous prize winners , and who all managed to cash in on their talent. Lights is Goulding's debut and contains many up-tempo songs made up of synthesizers, beats and a bit of guitar. To come straight to the point:
the song material that Goulding co-wrote a lot is actually better than the production. Lights sounds very contemporary, which is of course an advantage in the short term. However, the heavily produced sound could be corny again tomorrow. In addition, the electronica and Auto-Tune sound a bit unpleasant with the songs that have a clear folky underlay. A style à la might have made more sense and could have made Goulding shine more. Goulding has enough talent, but with Lights makes a false start. (JE)more
