After first seeking out complicated electronic music, Jamie Lidell eventually achieved success as a neo-soul singer. First with the help of computer equipment on Multiply (2005), later more in an acoustic environment on Jim (2008). He has now neatly dusted off a large part of his synthesizers and effects. With Compass, with the help of Beck, Feist and members of Grizzly Bear, he enters an unexplored
… path of spacy folk blues on which traditional music forms such as funk, soul and blues irrevocably underlie. The result is again not comparable to the competition, but whether it is as pleasant to listen to as the predecessor is the question. Lidell is a great fan of pungent sounds and jerky rhythms that at times seem like an extreme hiccup attack. The fact is, he is still a fantastic soul singer. (AD)more
