When the documentary Standing In The Shadows Of Motown was released in 2003, many pop stars spoke up about the injustice done to the former house band of the label (The Funk Brothers). After all, the significant contribution of these musicians to the sound of Motown had never been recognized. Phil Collins is the only one who put his money where his mouth was and actually hired three of them for his
… Motown album. It is so obvious that the many famous colleagues who preceded him - from Michael McDonald to yes, who actually not? - had not come up. And to underline once again that the Funk Brothers fans are right, Going Back is by far the best Motown tribute to date. Not only because of the fairly adventurous choice of repertoire, in which the nose of gourmet Collins betrays itself, but especially in the incredibly authentic sound of his accompanists. Phil Collins proves superfluously (after all, we remember his hit You Can't Hurry Love) that he fully understands this music. (MS)more
