It's always the same song with Ron Sexsmith. His albums are hailed by critics, while the general public does not want to embrace the singer / songwriter. The Canadian was fed up with it after a career of more than fifteen years. Long Player Late Bloomer finally had to be a hit record. Hence the legendary metal (!) Producer Bob Rock was roped in for the production. Known for his work with and Rock
… seems miles away from the quiet songsmith, but Sexsmith just wanted to score. Musically they succeeded. The musical palette that Rock has chosen for Sexsmith slightly rubs against country pop and soft pop. What is also striking is that the singer sounds quite fat on this CD, while in the past he sounded a bit thin. The plan to make a pop record of Long Player Late Bloomer has been successful in that respect. A careless remark in the tumultuous ending of Eye Candy says enough: 'buy this record!' If no one does that, that's no problem. In the worst case scenario, Sexsmith has treated us to the same good song again. (JE)more
