The Utrecht Gem has undergone a remarkable development since 2004. While the rock group around leader Maurits Westerik was once a poor substitute for The Libertines and The Strokes, seven years later this claim can no longer be sustained. Hunters Go Hungry, Gem's fourth album, follows the mature sounding New from 2008. Even now you can hear that the gentlemen have aged a few years. The twelve songs
… are casual and playful, but never get out of control. The boyishness has remained, but they are clearly seasoned men who have put their heart and soul into this. Label mates such as Jeroen Kleijn (Daryll-Ann, Johan) and Reyer Zwart (Solo) provide a solid foundation. This is completed by the production of Excelsior label boss Frans Hagenaars, who previously produced Gem's debut and second album. He polishes up the sometimes somewhat stale song material with fun organs and funky horns. All in all, Hunters Go Hungry is not a surprising, but a strong record. And that is another sign of development. (JE)more
