In September 2008, English jazz DJ Gilles Peterson paid a visit to sun-drenched Havana to broaden his musical knowledge and dig deep into the Cuban music archives. Since he was there anyway, he immediately took the opportunity to form the Havana Cultura Band, a band that reinterpreted a selection of Peterson's favorite floor fillers. For the sequel, he decided to do things differently. In January
… 2011, he returned to the island with producer Digital Mystikz to record traditional rhythms played by Roberto Fonseca and his band. This session had two goals. Firstly, it served as study material for both producers to master the distinction between subtle rhythms like guaguancó, mozambique and cha-cha-cha. Second, many of these rhythms were used as the basis for the recordings that would take place later this year with local talent. The atmosphere on The Search Continues is significantly less exuberant than on the predecessor. Peterson mainly chooses to show a restrained side of Cuban music. (AD)more
