That was not entirely coincidental, because his alien alter ego Ziggy Stardust gave him plenty of room to link his previous careers as a mime artist, painter and actor with solid rock and roll. … mainly conquered England by storm. On Ziggy Stardust, Bowie further developed his talent as a songwriter. Not only the well-known title track and single Starman but especially the closing Rock 'N' Roll Suicide (a symphony in just under three minutes) amazed the audience who only knew him from his earlier listening songs. The singer was assisted by the Spiders From Mars who sounded remarkably earthy to Martians. Ziggy Stardust also meant Bowie's international breakthrough and he would also be the only English glam rock artist to bring the American pop audience to their knees. (PdK)more
