Chances are you've heard Call Me Maybe by Carly Rae Jepsen (1985) hundreds of times on the radio. In the Netherlands, the Canadian singer just did not score a number 1 hit with it. The song can of course be found on her second album Kiss, on which Jepsen presents herself as a kind of Ke $ ha without sharp edges. She puts her self-written songs in a similarly bouncy electro pop jacket. But where
… someone like Ke $ ha opts for a wild image and tries to develop new land, Jepsen stays within the limits of what is permissible. She also appears (consciously?) Younger than she actually is. For example, she is almost ten years older than Justin Bieber, her label mate and good acquaintance, but she does try the fish in the same pond. Of course Bieber also participates in a song on Kiss. The very sweet ballad Beautiful is not the nicest song on the CD, but it is cleverly chosen from a marketing point of view. More fun is the collaboration with Owl City at the cozy Good Time. With the handful of other stomping pop songs that Kiss has to offer, Jepsen has enough for the future. You will still hear her visit often. (JE)more
