That Neil Young is indestructible. Barely a month after he released his bulky autobiography Waging Heavy Peace, he comes with this double album. The title Psychedelic Pill is a nod to the 1960s. Although there are no mind-blowing sitars or extraterrestrial sound effects on this album, Neil Young was always too earthy for that. The endless jams on this album are really sixties. … Driftin 'Back has a nice stuttering riff in the best Crazy Horse tradition, but it continues for a maximum of 28 (!) Minutes. Why actually? In six or seven minutes it had lost none of its expressiveness. Ramada Inn (17 minutes) also seems to be written for an endless road trip through an extinct desert. The drawn-out songs mainly seem to serve the playing pleasure of the old master. Rocking out loosely with a group of old friends; Psychedelic Pill is nothing more and nothing less than that. (PdK)more
