In 1973 LA street funk band War recorded the legendary album The World Is A Ghetto. Forty years later, this naturally calls for a festive anniversary edition. War was a unique band that managed to combine funk, African percussion, rhythm & blues, Latin rhythms and jazz in an optimal way. In addition, they had a remarkable horn section consisting of saxophone and harmonica. The unique War sound
… was created by endlessly jamming each song until the best version was found. The title song and hit The World Is A Ghetto was played no less than thirty-six times before the band was satisfied. A craftsmanship that is hard to find today. Their best-known hit The Cisko Kid gained a lot of support for War in Latin American circles, and also played a major role in the film Up In Smoke by cannabis comedians Cheech & Chong. That War was not completely averse to hash and weed is evident from Four Cornered Room, inspired by the first hash experiments of bassist BB Dickerson. City, Country, City is another long drawn out jam that was actually intended for the movie The Legend Of Nigger Charley, but was eventually pulled out by the band.
