Rapper U-God is by far the least interesting group member of the legendary hip-hop collective Wu-Tang Clan. It's no shame that he loses out to Wu colleagues GZA, Raekwon, Method Man and Ghostface Killah, but it did keep his solo career from getting off the ground. Nevertheless, he has made important contributions to the necessary Wu classics. For example, 'Golden Arms' left a deep impression on
… tracks like It's Yourz, Triumph (Wu-Tang Forever, 1997), Winter Warz (Ironman, 1996) and Investigative Reports (Liquid Swords, 1995). His solo repertoire therefore contrasts sharply with his work in groups. The new record The Keynote Speaker cannot change that, despite the reasonably strong productions. U-God does not recite the most ingenious lyrics with his striking bass-heavy voice. At times he is even trumped by rappers like Method Man, Elzhi and Inspectah Deck, who are guests on his album. The second disc of this release, where Ghostface among others makes its appearance, sounds a lot more attractive. (GL)more
