Laura Veirs once studied geology and Chinese, but rolled into the music world and is already on her ninth album with Warp And Weft. Like most of her previous albums, this one was produced by her husband Tucker Marine. Still, there were some notable changes. This is how the duo went into the studio for the first time, previous albums were recorded at home in the basement. A large number of session
… musicians were also brought in, making Warp And Weft sound fuller than its predecessors. Nevertheless, Veirs was once again inspired by America's rich folk past. There are two traditionals on the album, and Finister Saw The Angels is a tribute to Howard Finster, an obscure Alabama artist. Light and dark alternate, both musically and lyrically. For example, there is a sweet song about the sun next to an indictment of firearms possession. Veirs recorded Warp And Weft while heavily pregnant with her second son. That is why this album is dear to her, but fans of her work will also find enough great songs to embrace this album. (PdK)more
