The hip hop trio Young Fathers is in a different world. These Scottish gentlemen, two of whom have African roots, approach hip-hop in their own way. The alternative hip-hop label Anticon is therefore the perfect home base for this crazy act. After a number of mixtapes there is the official debut album Dead. Young Fathers seems to get inspiration from everywhere and this also makes the record sound
… like a paint bomb with colors from African hip-hop and psychedelic rock, among others. It's not very cheerful on Dead, but what do you want with such a title. The music is sometimes quite heavy, but the diversity offers a solution. The claustrophobic beats and depressing, yet stunning vocals are tastefully relieved by the more exciting productions and grime-oriented raps. If the men would climb the stage live with kilts and bagpipes, the whole picture would be complete. (GL)more
