Amy Winehouse, Adele, Emeli Sandé: some of the names of British soul aunts who not only did well in their own country, but also managed to get together far beyond. Chances are that Paloma Faith (yes, that's her real name) can be added to that list. The London singer already managed to convert her first two albums to platinum in her own country and listening to this third you understand why. Paloma's
… songs roll smoothly into the ears. Moreover, her music, due to the many nods to the past, usually sounds pleasantly recognizable. She wrote the first single Can't Rely On You together with Pharrell Williams who, thanks to the jerky rhythm typical of his productions, also left his mark on it. The rhythm contrasts nicely with Faith's soulful voice-to-hurricane force with which she darts from high to low. A Perfect Contradiction lives up to its name: Paloma seems to want to explore a different style in every song. Disco, a power ballad, R & b, vintage soul, it all comes along on this entertaining record. (PdK)more
