Robert Cray is celebrating his band's 40th anniversary with the seventeenth studio album In My Soul. Cray, has seen it all by now and with five Grammys in his pocket, he no longer has to prove anything. However, he cannot be blamed for a lack of urge to prove, because In My Soul is a sublime album in which a lot of time and energy has clearly been invested. Apart from Nobody Fault But Mine - an
… otherwise unnecessary cover by Otis Redding - there are no big surprises to be found. The American blues giant does what it does best and its warmth only increases as the years go by. Sultry blues tracks like Fine Yesterday and Hold On are interspersed with infectious uptempo songs like You Move Me and Hip Tight Unions. The record was fine-tuned by producer Steve Jordan who previously worked with John Mayer. He has managed to sublime mix his laidback sound with that of Cray. (BvdV)more
