After Rodney Crowell opted for collaborations with Mary Karr and on his two previous albums, he is back on his own feet on Tarpaper Sky. Crowell seemed to hold on to the past on his latest records, but on this like record he sounds remarkably passionate and positive about the future. Besides Springsteen, also clearly inspired him. The raw roots rock dominates on Tarpaper Sky. His voice sounds
… more alive than ever before, but it gives songs like The Long Journey Home, Frankie Please and God I'm Missing You a lot of charm. Also successful is the beautiful tribute The Flyboy And The Kid to his mentor , as well as one of his most romantic songs in times, It Wouldn't Be Me Without You. Rodney Crowell can still do it, even on his own. (BvdV)more
