Ray Lamontagne has teamed up with producer Dan Auerbach for his fifth studio album. The guitarist of The Black Keys knows how to sound more accessible with his own band and that fate has befallen Lamontagne. For example, with Supernova he does not elaborate on the successful sound of God Willin '& The Creek Don't Rise (2010), the album that earned him a Grammy. His guts can be praised, but the
… result is nothing special. Supernova ripples on and has, except for the title track, few tracks that stand out. Lamontagne's not too powerful voice is regularly snowed under by the instrumental accompaniment and his voice doesn't seem to lend itself to the poppy sound that Auerbach opts for. That makes Supernova a somewhat disappointing successor to the beautiful rootsy God Willin '& The Creek Don't Rise. There had been more in it. (BvdV)more
