If you hear the music of My Baby you would never suspect that this band has a mainly Dutch base. Together with Daniel Johnston from New Zealand, Joost and Cato van Dyck make music that could come from the most humid wetlands as well as from the driest prairie in America. Swampy atmospheres in sweltering heat drip from Shamanaid. A heartfelt mix of delta blues, prairie countryside, light funk influences
… and the folky singing of Cato van Dyck, is driven by thrusting beats, creating beautiful, hypnotic rhythms. Sounded their debut (2013) just a little too slick to come across as authentic, Shamanaid is perfectly balanced production-wise. The repetitive licks of the band are optimally reinforced by the beats, making Americana finally accessible to the modern dance floor. But you don't have to dance to it, because Shamanaid offers enough variety and depth to be able to listen to it relaxed. (AD)more
