With Pink Floyd coming to an end for good, David Gilmour uses his most powerful weapon to keep fans attached. That's his guitar, of course. No one can play as bluesy and psychedelic at the same time as Gilmour. His persistent howling notes and crystal clear arpeggios seem to find their way straight to the cosmos, where the gods start playing the air guitar with teary eyes. His 4th solo album is
… carried by it. Not that Rattle That Lock no longer has to offer. It contains a number of tasteful songs that he co-wrote with his partner and lyricist Polly Samson. The songs are richly arranged with the help of many guest musicians, from cult hero Robert Wyatt to presenter and pianist Jools Holland and singers David Crosby and Graham Nash. Gilmour's own voice has become a bit painfully raw over the years, but still has enough eloquence. This applies even more to his guitar playing with which Rattle That Lock becomes a post-Pink Floyd album not to be sneezed at. (MR)more
