New York based singer-songwriter Jesse Malin played in the glam punk band D Generation before embarking on a solo career. That group called it quits in 1999, but reunited in 2011 for a reunion tour. It therefore took a little longer for Malin to finish a follow-up to Love It To Life (2010), but in 2015 he made up for that with two albums in one year. New York Before The War was released in March,
… and Outsiders will follow seven months later. No lack of inspiration so it seems, and this is also evident from the very diverse Outsiders. Malin can rock hard (Here's The Situation) while at another moment he sounds like a modest singer-songwriter who got his inspiration from Neil Young (Stay Free). He adds a saxophone and clavinet for something that even feels a little funky and reminiscent of Beck (Society Sally), then another violin pops up and he gets close to country. Finally, the tuba and sousaphone in the closing track You Know It's Dark When Atheists Start To Pray literally blow out the pleasant Outsiders. (IV)more
