It is not often that a song is made about having an asthma attack during a morning of gardening. Courtney Barnett did it, with the very nice Avant Gardener. The song was featured on the album , with which the Australian bundled her first two EPs in 2014. There was more such material on those EPs: dryly funny, candid, intelligent and performed with a certain laziness. The latter yielded her comparisons
… with 'slacker rock' artists from the nineties: deliberately nonchalant and with as little glamor as possible. On her official debut Sometimes I Sit And Think, Sometimes I Just Sit Barnett lives up to the expectations that her EPs aroused. With Barnett herself on guitar and only bass and drums as accompaniment, she delivers a very pleasant album on which she can rock a lot, but sometimes also slows down a bit. She always shows an original view of the world that is at the same time very recognizable, the subjects are sometimes that everyday. It was just waiting for someone to write a great song about it and Courtney Barnett does that over and over here. (IV)more
