With strong songs and an even stronger image, The Kik conquered the Dutch stages. The nostalgic beat band could be found at almost every festival since 2012. Singer Dave von Raven even became a well-known Dutchman who participated in TROS programs. 'But there is something about myself that you will never see on TV', he sings in the title track of Stad En Land. The third album by The Kik is a reaction
… to all the successes and the wild existence that came with it. The city in the album title is of course Rotterdam, the dynamic metropolis that seemed inextricably linked to the band. But Von Raven needed some rest and left for Ooltgensplaat on Goeree-Overflakkee. That environment inspired the second part of the album title. The music goes along with this. The horizon has broadened and besides the catchy uptempo songs, we also hear quiet listening songs. The more contemplative lyrics are sometimes colored with moody jazz and bossa nova, with the wind section especially making an impression. It is all less stylish and more varied. The gimmick is gone, the quality has remained. (JE)more
