Return To The 37th Chamber is the logical sequel to Enter The 37th Chamber (2009). Here too the American band El Michels Affair reinterprets original compositions by the hip hop company . In their view, this album can be seen as the soundtrack for an imaginary kung fu film. In the view of a film lover, however, the whole thing comes across significantly different. Due to the slow tempo of the songs,
… the connection with lightning-fast kung fu techniques is hard to find. The music is more like soundtracks from Italian police films or spaghetti westerns from the 1970s. Lome, menacing atmospheres that suit opponents who look intimidating in the eye, rather than dangerous Shaolin monks jumping around. This does not detract from the fact that Return To The 37th Chamber is an excellent record for listeners who are looking for trip hop played live. (AD)more
