Irish experimental folk bard Adrian Crowley claims he dreams his music. And true or false, listening to his eighth album Dark Eyed Messenger, there is something to imagine. His whimsical and ghostly folk seems to portray a different reality, such as the mists of (half) sleep or madness. At the same time, the lyrics he sings with a rustic baritone are full of dark irony. Like the song Halfway To
… Andalucia in which someone is on the run who has staged his own death. He has heard that his funeral was poorly attended but that at least his favorite song was played: 'Born Free'. Just like his American counterpart (in irony and baritone) Crowley knows how to hold your attention with songs like this as short stories. Contrasting at times and then rhyming with his dark and unearthly music, this once again produces a fascinating listening album. (MR)more
