The last of the five albums this Australian group released in 2017. Gumboot Soup was put online at the end of December, when predecessor was yet to appear in physical form. Thanks to this overproduction, this septet has grown into an extremely tight, close-knit and creative collective. On Gumboot Soup this is reflected in eleven pointed and strikingly melodic songs. The emphasis is on vocals and
… harmony vocals, against a backdrop of tight psychedelic and progressive rock and funk. A song like Barefoot Desert is almost light in tone and shows that frontman and leader Stu Mackenzie has become much more powerful and self-assured in singing compared to previous records. Five albums in a year is of course quite an overkill. But, completed with Gumboot Soup, there are no weaknesses. (MR)more
