The eleventh studio album by the American band Animal Collective - this time without - is an audiovisual concept album in celebration of the International Year of the Reef. The album is supported by visuals from Coral Morphologic, a duo that creates artful macro videos of corals and marine life. … coral reef all over the world. From the dreamy opening track it does indeed seem like you are underwater. The slow electro pop and the colorful recordings of Coral Morphologic go well together. Due to the slow tempo, which is hardly increased anywhere, the whole has a hypnotic effect. The Magnetizing Animal Collective from (2009), however, this is not. The music is closer to the earlier sound of the band, think of the album (2003). Tangerine Reef is actually one long sound collage that - despite the right intentions - can eventually be experienced as sleep-inducing. (JvQ)more
