French Jeanne Galice grew up in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Congo. This multicultural slant was already clearly audible on her debut album (2016), which features the hit Makeba. 'I am on my way,' she sings on the opening track of her second album Souldier and that is not a lie. The singer kicks off her album at breakneck speed and contagiousness. Influences from both African music and the Middle East can
… be heard. As a child she learned to play the tabla and this percussion instrument returns to Souldier several times. On other tracks you can hear Eastern stringed instruments. The last song - the title track - was written by Galice after the 2016 attack on the Pulse nightclub in Orlando and targeted the LGBTQ community. So don't think that Jain is just a flat pop artist, she actually has something to say. She does this with seemingly uncomplicated and cheerful pop music that is full of cultural influences. (JvQ)more
