For the sequel to (2017), Texan R&B artist Khalid settles with his demons. He discusses issues such as depression, stress and anxiety in his texts. For him that is the way to a 'free spirit', as the title suggests. Despite the loaded themes, this album radiates casualness. The light-footed beats roll by pleasantly, but sometimes the songs are a bit difficult to distinguish from each other.
Especially with a playing time of just under an hour, it is quite a challenge to listen to Khalid's story, which he brings with the best of intentions. Songs like Talk and Outta My Head with produced by break up the unit sausage a little bit. Free Spirit is steeped in sentiment, but has the heart in the right place. (JvQ)more
