On May 27, 2011, the turbulent life of the highly socially critical writer, poet and singer Gil Scott-Heron ended. Just before his death, he left the world his most personal album I'm New Here. … would later turn out to be a masterpiece. His poems were combined with Russell's minimalist, ominous soundscapes, a combination that reflected his pain unequivocally. A year later edited with We're New Again these readings by adding jerky hip-hop beats, melancholic melody lines and groaning effects. Ten years later, the turn fell of jazz drummer Makaya McCraven, who completely maintains the fatalistic character, but through the accompaniment of freestyle drum parts, dirty blues and free jazz makes an album that ultimately fits Scott-Heron better than previous electronic versions.
