In the year 2020 there does not seem to be a revival of the nu metal yet. This genre of metal in combination with staged hip-hop beats and raps, even seems to have completely fallen into oblivion. Deftones from the Californian Sacremento were part of the nu metal scene and made a big impression in 2000, also in the Netherlands with the album
White Pony. Twenty years later they show on Ohms that they
… are more at home in eclectic alternative metal. Hip-hop elements are hardly audible anymore, but vocalist Chino Moreno still knows how to cleverly alternate his primal roar with more worn vocals. He always sounds powerful, against a backdrop of syrupy drifting guitar riffs with fierce outbursts. Deftones is above all a theatrical band, in which the great drama is not shunned. Inspired Moreno and his mates still sound on this strong album. (MR)more
