The first words Róisín Murphy utters on her fifth album are 'I feel my story is still untold'. Spirited, when you consider that the opening track Simulation dates back to 2012. It shows next to humour also the wilfulness of the singer, which on Róisín Machine manifests itself in yet another turnaround in sound. It's actually a collection of newer work and singles that have been written since
… 2010, but didn't fit on Hairless Toys (2015) or Take Her Up To Monto! (2016). The music produced by Richard Barratt dives deep into disco and house. It's all less experimental than her previous two albums, but you just hear that the former Moloko-singer doesn't care about conventions. The songs are often a big tension curve, or a big climax. There is actually nothing in between. Róisín Machine is a bit freaky, but above all very conjuring and discharging. (JvQ)more
