The music of the British duo Autechre has not followed the conventional path since their early days. Alternating from hard to more dazed, the duo seek out the experiment within the IDM every time. With SIGN, Sean Booth and Rob Brown take a slightly more accessible path. That accessibility stems from melodic electronics that conjure the duo out of their decks. Yet there's still enough squeaking and
… crackling, so that from start to finish SIGN is an exciting ride that incorporates many fine details. The songs don't really have a head or tail, but start and unfold as sound collages to which a lot of flowing, instead of angular sounds have been added this time. Just listen to the electronic bubbles in si00 or the pulsating synths in psin AM. You still can't tie a rope to the track titles. (JvQ)more
