Although the American singer-songwriter Jim White can bow to a wide audience, he seems to consciously always have himself among the outsiders or misfits. Whereas on previous albums he sang mainly on behalf of other social outcasts, Misfit's Jubilee seems like a true ego document. Once again it offers a selection of strikingly accessible songs rooted in rock and americana with a touch of vaudeville.
But the arrangements are deliberately crooked, while White doesn't always seem to take himself seriously as a performer, with theatrical voices that have also been pulled through a deformer. For his eighth album White went to Brussels where he worked with an extensive Belgian band. Almost surreptitiously White is a writer of catchy songs and he doesn't even need this foolishness to stand out. (MR)more
