Between the release of
Sweetener (2018) and
Thank U, Next (2019), Ariana Grande was struggling with the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, including the death of her ex-partner
Mac Miller. Thank U, Next was an answer to that difficult period and with Positions she dives even further into her process. Grande is now at a point where she can give her feelings a place and reflect on the effect
… her mental state has on her (future) love life. Subjects such as sex also pass by, with subtle contributions of humour, such as the teasing 34+35 (indeed, that's 69 together). Grandes voice is still a powerful weapon and in the production this time, besides r&b, also neo-soul and funk are incorporated. Colleagues Doja Cat, The Weeknd and Ty Dolla $ign sing a tune on this album on which Grande knows how to wrap serious things in a stylish way. (JvQ)more
