With the release of two excellent live albums in 2020 (
Chunky Shrapnel and
Live In San Francisco '16), King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard almost made us forget about their last studio album
Infest The Rats' Nest (2019) already. In their continuing quest for musical expansion, this
Metallica-tribute-sounding thrash metal record wasn't much of a success. This Australian sextet also had to spend 2020 at
… home due to the corona crisis. Here, they once again pulled out the microtonal instruments they used primarily on the album Flying Microtonal Banana (2017). KG (for the first time) mainly harks back to their psychedelic prog rock from that period. Surprisingly, KG - subtitle: Explorations Into Microtonal Tuning Vol.2 - does not, therefore, with floaty and bluesy rock framed by many Arabic-sounding scales. A recognizable style that makes King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard such a beloved band. (MR)more
